The future of transportation is changing, and electric mobility is playing an increasingly important role in that transformation. From electric trucks to advanced charging stations and battery storage, new technologies are creating opportunities to rethink how goods are transported and how businesses manage energy.

As part of our efforts to build a modern cold chain network in Ghana, CryoChain travelled to China to explore some of these technologies and understand how they could support our vision for refrigerated transportation.

One of the important stops during our visit was StarCharge, a global company specialising in electric vehicle charging infrastructure, battery energy storage and smart energy solutions.

For us, the visit was an opportunity to look beyond the vehicles themselves and explore the technology and infrastructure needed to make electric transportation work.

Exploring What Powers Electric Trucks

Electric trucks offer an alternative to conventional diesel-powered transportation. They present opportunities to reduce fuel dependence, improve energy efficiency and support cleaner logistics.

However, introducing electric refrigerated trucks comes with additional considerations.

Unlike ordinary delivery trucks, refrigerated vehicles must power cooling systems while transporting goods. Whether carrying tomatoes, vegetables, fish, meat or other perishable products, maintaining the right temperature throughout the journey is essential.

This means that the success of electric refrigerated transportation depends on more than choosing the right truck. It also requires reliable charging facilities, suitable battery capacity and efficient energy management.

During our engagement with StarCharge, we explored its charging technologies and how they could support the development of electric vehicle infrastructure for future cold chain operations.

Why EV Charging Infrastructure Matters

Imagine a network of electric refrigerated trucks moving agricultural produce from farms to cold storage hubs and distribution centres across Ghana. For these vehicles to operate efficiently, they need access to dependable charging points.

This is where charging infrastructure becomes important.

We explored how charging stations could be incorporated into strategically located cold chain hubs and other logistics locations. Such an approach could allow vehicles to recharge during planned stops and make fleet operations more organised.

Our interest is in understanding how these systems can be designed to meet the demands of commercial transportation, particularly for vehicles that need to operate regularly and maintain refrigeration throughout their journeys.

Connecting Electric Mobility With Energy Storage

Another important area of our exploration was battery energy storage.

Cold storage facilities depend on reliable electricity to keep food at the required temperatures. Power interruptions can put stored products at risk, making energy reliability an important part of cold chain operations.

StarCharge's work in battery energy storage and smart energy management introduced us to possibilities worth exploring for our planned infrastructure.

We are particularly interested in how solar energy, battery storage and EV charging can work together.

For example, a cold chain hub could use solar power to support refrigeration, store excess energy in batteries and provide charging facilities for electric refrigerated trucks.

This kind of integrated energy system could help improve energy management, reduce dependence on conventional power sources and support more efficient operations.

What This Means for CryoChain's Vision in Ghana

Our visit to China was about learning, exploring and identifying technologies that could contribute to the future of cold chain logistics in Ghana.

The agricultural sector needs more than refrigerated trucks. It needs a complete system that connects transportation, storage, energy and distribution.

By exploring electric vehicle technology, charging infrastructure and energy storage solutions, we are looking at how these different components can work together to support farmers, food businesses and consumers.

We also recognise that adopting these technologies requires careful planning, suitable infrastructure and partnerships that understand the demands of the Ghanaian market.

Looking Ahead

The conversations and technology exploration during our visit to StarCharge form part of our wider efforts to understand what is possible and identify solutions that align with our long-term plans.

We believe the future of cold chain logistics will be shaped by how effectively transportation and energy systems work together.

Our ambition is to build infrastructure that does more than move food. We want to help preserve its quality, reduce waste, improve market access and create a more efficient way of connecting farms to consumers.

For CryoChain, exploring electric trucks, smart charging and energy storage is another step towards building a smarter, more connected and sustainable cold chain for Ghana and West Africa.
